Google recently announced that we would be getting an official preview of Android L at Google I/O. Then told us that we can expect a release of the update in the Fall. We haven’t seen a release date being passed around but we assume it will be about the same time 4.4 KitKat was released last year (October or November).

Android L update schedule for leading smartphones

The big question is, when can you get Android L on the device you have in your hands right now? This is going to be a hard question to answer but we will certainly try our best. It took two to three months before manufacturers like Samsung and LG were able to update their flagship devices with Android 4.4 KitKat. So if you have an LG G2, an LG G3, a Galaxy Note 3 or a Galaxy S4/S5 then you will most likely see an update towards the end of the year. This update process could even spill over into the next year like it did for the LG G2. Don’t forget that HTC has pledged to push Android L to the HTC One M7 and the HTC One M8 within 90 days of receiving the final code. So if Google ships the update at the end of October, you could seen this update at the end of January.
Those of us with a Google Nexus and Google Play Edition device will be seeing this update much earlier. For example, if you have a Google Nexus 5 or a Google Nexus 7 then you can get the preview build for your device right now. It’s not certain whether or not the Google Nexus 4 or the Google Nexus 10 will qualify for a preview build, or if Google will do a preview build for the other Google Play Edition devices. If this changes then we will be sure to keep you updated with the latest information.
All we know is that Google is said to release Android L sometime in the Fall. So those of us with Nexus devices should see the update at the end of the year while the rest will most likely get it at the beginning of next year.
